On a recent visit back home to Manchester, I went to see The Fratellis gig at the Carling Apollo.
As this was the first time I had seen them, I was really looking forward to a great show from this years “Big thing” and although a few things let the evening down a little, on the whole it was a thoroughly enjoyable gig.
Doors at the Apollo opened pretty early (19:00) so there was quite a lengthy wait until support act Figure 5 came on stage. Normally at these sorts of things I’m not overly worried about seeing the support act but after an hour in the circle bar I decided to go and see the warm up and was pleasantly suprised by them as they performed a lively half hour set.
We then had another half hour of roadies re setting the stage before finally at 9 o’clock The Fratellis took to the stage.

What followed was a lively run through of most of the songs from Costello Music, with a couple of new tracks thrown in for good measure ending with a rather bemusing Goldfrapp cover.
I cannot fault the bands performance one bit, the only problem being the length of their set.
I am used to headliners doing a minimum of at least an hour and a half but if you take out the gap between leaving and coming back for the inevitable encore - this set was a woefully short 50 odd minutes.
With tickets for this gig going fast it left a lot of people having to turn to the more expensive option of eBay and other such places, as a result, I left the Apollo feeling slightly let down.
In conclusion then, great band, great songs, just a shame about the length of the performance….
