As yesterday was Valentines Day, a trip to the Cinema with the GF for a Rom Com was the order of the day. We went to see Music & Lyrics at the Odeon in Lincoln, starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. After watching quite a few of Hugh Grants romantic comedies, I pretty much knew what to expect from this film and I do not mean that in a bad way, I have always found his performances to be first rate in particular his on screen chemistry with his leading ladies. In Music & Lyrics Grant plays Alex Fletcher, a former 80’s pop star who is ekeing out a living doing reunion gigs, theme park performances and anything else he can find.
He is suddenly given the chance to write a song for Cora Corman (Haley Bennett) who according to his manager Chris Riley (Brad Garrett) is “Bigger than Britney and Christina put together”. Unfortunately Alex has a small problem with writing lyrics.

As half of the writing team in 80’s band POP!, Alex was responsible for the music and his partner Colin Thompson (Scott Porter) the words. While Colin went on to mega stardom after the break up of the band Alex tried and failed to go solo.
A chance meeting with Sophie Fisher (Barrymore), who comes to look after the plants in his flat, leads to Alex asking Sophie to write the words to his music after she randomly sing along to his playing. Meanwhile Sophie is dealing with a few problems of her own, most noticibly Sloan Cates (Campbell Scott), her ex-lover and literary teacher who has written a best selling book using their relationship and Sophie’s insecurities as it’s main theme.
After their song is taken on by Cora and an ill fated meeting with Cates the two fall out leading Sophie to take a job away managing one of her sisters shops.
Alex realises that Sophie is too important to him and uses his appearence at Cora’s opening night of her tour to make his move.
This is not the best of the romantic comedies of the last 15 years but is by no means the worst either, and is a more than adequate date movie.
Felgercarb Rating - 7/10
