FINALLY, a believable James Bond….
Went to watch Casino Royale last night and at long last we have a Bond film that is everything it should be. Eyebrows were raised with the casting of Daniel Craig but having seen him in a few other things I was confident that with the right project, he would make a superb Bond and I am glad to say I was not disappointed.
Right from the beginning the action sequences were superb, with Bond chasing a very limber bomb maker all round a construction site before killing him and trashing an entire Embassy building.
Too many times in previous films, our hero has dispatched an opponent with a karate chop and a quip but Craig’s Bond fights tooth and nail for his life in every fight scene and regularly gets as good as he gives out leaving him bloody and bruised for a lot of the film.
Gone are the cheesy one liners of previous outings, which may have been acceptable in the Connery/Moore era but are no longer viable, instead we have a ruthless, efficient killer with a dark sense of humour. Also missing from this Bond film is the overly extravagant Bond villain, replaced with realistic terrorists more suited to the current political climate and considerably more believable.
Having grown up, like most people with the “Bank holiday Bond film” I always enjoyed the previous films and do not want to make this review sound like all other Bond films were rubbish as that is not the case, they were just of a time and that time has long since gone.
Before last nights film my favourite James Bond movie was License to Kill with Timothy Dalton as this showed us a slightly edgier Bond who flouted the rules and had his 00 status revoked all in pursuit of one man, who he eventually killed in cold blood.
My only problem with this film is the wanton destruction of a quite lovely Aston Martin DBS, which as a big AM fan brought a tear to my eye I have to say….

Again, as with previous reviews I do not want to say too much as I do not want to spoil this film for people who have not yet seen the movie. Whether you are an avid Bond watcher or just looking for a night at this pictures, this film is a definate must see.
I will have to break the rules of my own rating system for this film and award an unprecedented extra half a point.
BOND IS BACK….
Felgercarb Rating - 9.5/10
