Went to see the excellent INSPIRAL CARPETS again on Friday night @ The Marcus Garvey Ballroom in Nottingham with Adam. Yet again they were top notch value but we had to wait quite a while before they appeared….
The doors opened at 19:30, so we arrived at 20:00 expecting to have maybe one support act before the Carpets at about 21:00. Instead we arrived in the ballroom to see a scene reminiscent of a school disco, with people gathering around the edge of the ballroom not wanting to set foot in the middle. We seemed to have arrived at the beginning of the sound check with various band members and roadies taking turns to go to the mike and say “check 1-2″ whilst other messed with instruments.
After what seemed like an eternity the first band “Mintive?” took to the stage, I couldn’t really tell if they were good or not as I could not hear a word they were singing. The music seemed reasonable though. After them came the actual support band “The Fay Hallam Trinity” which consisted of Girl lead singer on Hammond organ, bass and drums. They seemed to be reasonably well supported fan wise but every songs end was met with impatient mooing from the majority of the crowd.
Finally at just after 23:00 the Carpets strode on to the stage and kicked into “Joe”, there usual starter at gigs….most of the songs from the “Cool As” best of were performed in another energetic performance, intertwined with the usual banter from the boys.
Again highly enjoyable gig, if you get a chance to see them, do….
