So now that the dust has settled on yet another England attempt at world domination, just how close did we get to becoming world champions?
Well not very, if the truth be told. YES we did get to the quarter final stage and we were some what unlucky against the Portuguese, but in the cold light of day I think we have to be realistic and admit that we were never really going to get through to the final and win it.
The performances never stood up to our previous ones and yet again Sven is tactically inept when it comes to major tournaments. His squad selection was woeful and well let’s just say I for one will be pretty glad to see the back of him….
Forget all the Rooney/Ronaldo (I will come to that later) shenanigans in the press, they are not the reason we are out of the World Cup, basically we just were not good enough which is a shame because I honestly believed that this time we really had a great chance with our current crop of players.
What makes it worse is the failure of two of the tournament favorites to make it through as well, meaning we would have faced an ageing France team and then possibly the hosts Germany.
Anyway, enough moping time to get on with life, time for the part time football fans to take those stupid flags off their cars….
Next stop the new Premiership season….
